"My
life is so boring!" I frequently hear this complaint. It's
usually followed by, "But I don't know what else to do." To
quote writer Molly Ivins, "The first rule of holes: when
you're in one, stop digging." What do you start doing? Follow
these tips for a jumpstart.
Own
It. If you want to change your life, be 100% responsible
for making it happen. Stop waiting for outside forces to
change before you start living. If you start your sentences
with, "Someday, when," you're putting your life on hold.
What you have is NOW.
Change
One Thing. It's been said many times before; the definition
of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, and
expecting a different result. If you're in a rut you're deeply
entrenched in repetitive patterns. Become aware of them,
and then change just one thing. It doesn't matter how small.
You have to change the equation to get a different result.
Live
Consciously. Have you ever been driving your car, drifted
off in thought, and then suddenly arrived at your destination,
and you don't remember how you got there? If so, you're operating
on auto-pilot. Force yourself to be in the moment. Look
around. Can you name five landmarks on your route to work
that you've never noticed before? What color are the store
clerk's eyes? If you just spent 30 minutes in the doctor's
waiting room, can you describe the chair you sat in or the
pictures on the wall? Living in the moment takes energy.
The good news is, it generates energy too.
Model
Success. Recall a time when your life was more exciting.
What was different? Are those things still happening in your
life now? Chances are that you've drifted away from what
you know works for you. You might not be able to totally
re-create past circumstances. But, you can adapt pieces of
past actions that worked well and reincorporate them today.
Energy
In, Energy Out. What you focus on expands. If you put
all your energy into being in a rut - guess what? It gets
a deeper. Shift your attention to what you want to create
more of in your life. It may be the smallest ray of sunshine.
But, whatever you invest your energy in will grow.
