Coaching Frequently Asked Questions

Is coaching the same as therapy?
Why hire Susan Fee as my coach?
What's your coaching philosophy?
What's a typical coaching session?
What does it cost?

Q:  Is coaching the same as therapy?

A:  No.  Although I am a licensed mental health counselor, coaching is NOT therapy.  The main difference is that therapy focuses on healing past psychological pain, while coaching focuses on present and future goals.

Before beginning a coaching relationship, you'll be asked to complete an extensive questionnaire.  If it's determined that your needs would be better served therapeutically, I will discuss options with you.  Learn more about my counseling services.

Q:  Why hire Susan Fee as my coach?

A:  An investment in your personal growth should not be taken lightly.  The first thing you need to know is that I walk my talk!  For the past 12 years, I've applied my knowledge of human development, motivation, and success to the business world.  As a corporate trainer, I've helped clients like Disney, Motorola, and United Airlines achieve peak performance.

As a mental health professional, I'm trained to listen to your story with unique insight.  I have an understanding of human behavior, motivation, and life transitions.  I have experience in helping clients achieve work/life balance, manage crises, and establish effective relationships.  I'm able to listen without judgment, with an understanding of both your subjective and objective experiences.

On a personal level, I live and breathe what I recommend for others.  I am happily married, a mother, and enjoy strong relationships with my friends.  I invest daily in my own well-being.  I am fit mentally, spiritually, physically, and financially.  I believe in coaches and mentors and have hired them myself.  I have achieved many of my personal dreams, and have many more to go!  I believe in life-long learning, and I will always be a life-long student.

Q.  What's Your Coaching Philosophy?

A:  My number one goal is to help you realize your desires.  I am an advocate for your life satisfaction, as you define it.  I believe you have the inner wisdom necessary to accomplish what you want, even though you may not have fully tapped into yet.

I develop a collaborative, supportive relationship tailored to your needs.  I'll get to know you well, and help you understand yourself even better.  I emphasize responsibility.  Making changes in your life can be hard.  I will not do the work for you, and if it becomes apparent you're not up to the challenge, I'll let you know.  I operate with respect.  In no way will I insert my personal agenda into your goals.  The coaching relationship is all about you!

Q:  What's a Typical Coaching Session?

A:  Clients are unique, and so is their coaching.  I work with clients to clearly establish their goals, and then develop a strategy.  This is a collaborative process.  Depending on client needs, sessions can be face-to-face, by phone, or email.  Most clients find phone and email contact convenient for their busy lives, and it can be done from any location.

Sessions are highly interactive.  We will discuss your progress, successes, and roadblocks.  An agenda and timeline will be set for new steps to be taken.  Homework may be assigned.  I will ask you questions to help guide you in discovering your own wisdom.  I will ask you to keep clarifying what you need from me, and how I can best serve our relationship.  You'll also receive my honest feedback and pointers on how to expedite your progress.

Sessions last between thirty minutes and one hour with the number of total sessions varying based on the program you choose:  Long distance or in-person and one time or month-to-month (see below).  You set the agenda and the calendar.  Since personal responsibility is paramount to your success, missed sessions are re-scheduled.

Q:  What does it cost?

A:   Depending on your needs, there are two programs available:   Long distance (phone and email only) or in person.  These sessions can be booked as one-time or month-to-month.

One-time, individual sessions are effective for brief assessment, brainstorming, and gaining clarity on immediate goals and/or problem solving.   Individual sessions work well for clients who want to utilize services "as needed," rather than an on-going program.   The fee for this service is $200 per hour, or $250 for 1.5 hours.   Sessions can be held by phone or in person.  The client is responsible for placing long distance phone calls or the cost of travel for face-to-face coaching.

A month-to-month program is the most effective approach for focusing on ambitious or complex coaching goals.   Examples include:  enriching personal or work relationships, developing stronger communication skills, preparing for a presentation, creating more life-balance, discovering new life goals, and developing higher levels of productivity.

The long distance program includes two 30-minute sessions per month by phone and unlimited email communication and support.  The fee for this service is $300 per month.   Prepayment discounts are available for 3-5 months of service (10%) and 6+ months (15%).  In person coaching includes four one-hour sessions per month.   The fee for this program is $400 per month plus travel to your location (if applicable).  Long term discounts apply as noted above.  Contact Susan for a quote.
